Pizza Burger: Recipe Sunday

Tomorrow is Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer. While the calendar claims that summer lasts for three more weeks, Labor Day is recognized by most in the US and the last hurrah for summer barbecues and parties. At the Antrobus household, it’s no different. But instead of being content with simply grilling some burgers and being done with it, we decided to give it a little more pizzaz. Why have an ordinary hamburger when you can make a pizza burger!

I’m no stranger to pizza flavored foods. I’ve already written about pizza quesadillas, and pita pizzas. I’ve even explained how to cook a pizza on the grill! You might think I’m running out of things to turn into a pizza. But I’m not!

The concept of a pizza burger is pretty simple; use a hamburger for the base to build a pizza. I grilled the hamburger patties, topped them with mozzarella while still on the grill, and them spooned some pizza sauce and covered with pepperoni. Then it all goes on a bun and you have your pizza burger!

Recipe type: Entree
Cuisine: American
Serves: 2
Ingredients
  • 2 hamburger patties
  • ½ c. shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 hamburger buns
  • ¼ c. pizza sauce
  • 6 slices pepperoni (optional)
Instructions
  1. Grill burgers until medium well (approximately 4 minutes per side on medium heat).
  2. Top burgers with cheese. Wait for cheese to melt and remove burgers from heat.
  3. Place eat burger on hamburger bun. Spoon pizza sauce over cheese and top with pepperoni slices.

Don’t like pepperoni? You could skip it, or replace it with your favorite pizza topping. I like broccoli as a pizza topping, so I could chop some broccoli florets and put on the burgers with the cheese. Speaking of cheese, another idea that would make this a little easier would be to use mozzarella slices instead of shredded cheese.
